Bronze sculpture group by Bert Kiewiet from 1993: ten farmers and traders, on a lawn on Grolloërstraat near the Brink, the village green in Rolde.
The ten figures stand close together on a low brick base, most of them wearing caps. The sculpture is a tribute to the market in Rolde. According to the OVVR, which organises the Roldermarkt, Rolde's annual village fair, it began as a livestock market: from 1785, cows, pigs, sheep, chickens and horses were traded there. On the base is a plaque with the name of the sculpture, the sculptor and the year.
Bert Kiewiet, full name Lammert Jan Kiewiet, was born in Amsterdam on 13 April 1918 and died in Mantinge on 31 August 2008. He grew up in Leeuwarden and after secondary school took a technical course. Only after he turned forty did he take evening classes in drawing and sculpture and become a sculptor. He went on teaching in Amsterdam until 1976, when he moved to Drenthe.
His bronze sculptures stand in many places in Drenthe and mostly show everyday life, such as Winkelende vrouwen (Women Shopping) in Beilen, Ontmoeting (Meeting) in Alphen aan den Rijn and in Zuidwolde, Lezend meisje (Girl Reading) in Emmen and Deliberation in Assen. In the municipality of Aa en Hunze there are also De Smid (The Blacksmith) on the Brink in Gieten, Wemeltje in Gasselte, Bescherming (Protection) in Bonnen and De Brugafdraaister (The Bridge Keeper) in Annerveenschekanaal.
