About Rolde
Rolde is an es village (esdorp), the old Drenthe type of village built beside a shared arable field, the es. It lies on the Rolderrug ridge in Drenthe, on the N33 between Assen and Gieten, and has just over 3,700 inhabitants. Until 1998 it was the seat of the municipality of Rolde; since then it has been part of Aa en Hunze.
In the middle of the village stands the Jacobuskerk, a Gothic church where for centuries the Etstoel, the highest court of Drenthe, held its sessions. Close to the church are the dolmens D17 and D18, and every September brings the Roldermarkt, Rolde’s annual fair. Around the village lies the Nationaal Park Drentsche Aa.
