On Wednesday 31 July and Wednesday 7 August you can still join the Kerkenpad in Aa en Hunze, a route past the churches of Rolde, Gieten, Gasselte, Anloo and Grolloo.

This year the Kerkenpad takes place on four Wednesdays; it already ran on 17 and 24 July. From 10am to 5pm there are guides in almost all the churches who talk about their history and architecture.

The churches

Three of the five churches date from the Middle Ages, and all five have an organ.

  • Rolde: the Jacobuskerk, a national monument.
  • Gieten: the Dorpskerk, with an organ from 1894.
  • Gasselte: the Witte Kerkje, on the edge of the high es, the village’s old arable land.
  • Anloo: the Magnuskerk, among thatched farmhouses and old oaks.
  • Grolloo: the Dorpskerk, a neoclassical building from 1853 and also a national monument.

The route

The whole route is 37 kilometres. You can walk, cycle or drive it, start at any of the churches and decide for yourself which ones to visit. Along the way there are places to eat, drink or have a picnic.

There are GPS files of the routes. These and more information are on the website of Stichting Behoud Rolder Kerk, the foundation for the preservation of Rolde’s church.
