Gemeentebelangen, a local party, the liberal VVD and the Christian Democratic CDA together form the new coalition, with 14 of the 21 seats: Gemeentebelangen has 8, the VVD 5 and the CDA 1. GroenLinks-PvdA, the Green-Labour alliance, which with 5 seats is as large as the VVD, is left out of the coalition. Each coalition party provides one full-time alderman, and together with mayor Anno Wietze Hiemstra and municipal secretary Ruthger Schoonderbeek the aldermen form the executive. The executive will decide at its first meeting which alderman takes on which portfolios.
The parties gave their coalition agreement the title Samen bouwen aan een sterk Aa en Hunze (Building a strong Aa en Hunze together). On finances, they are aiming for a budget that by 2030 is balanced for several years ahead. They also want to renew outdated community buildings, strengthen facilities in the villages and look at how housebuilding can be speeded up. Young people will get extra attention, including for their mental health. The agreement also names traditions such as the regional language, Easter bonfires and carbide shooting on New Year's Eve, which in the coalition's view hold the villages together. Farmers must be able to keep running their businesses without extra local rules that restrict them, and nature areas must stay open to residents and tourists.
