The Easter bonfires in Aa en Hunze can go ahead this weekend after all. The Veiligheidsregio Drenthe, the regional emergency services authority, has lowered the wildfire risk from phase 2 to phase 1, which means the fires may be lit again.

Only last week the bonfires were cancelled because of the drought. Since then the weather has changed: more rain fell than expected, the humidity is higher and there is no strong wind. That contributed to the relaxed advice.

Mayor Anno Wietze Hiemstra is pleased with the revised advice: “For many people in our municipality this is a special tradition. We hope that organisations can still put on something special despite the short time to prepare.”

Several villages are now building an Easter bonfire after all. The municipality continues to follow the advice of the Veiligheidsregio.
