The mayor and aldermen of Aa en Hunze have cancelled all fifteen planned Easter bonfires. Because of the continuing drought, the risk of wildfires is too great.

This article is now out of date: the Easter bonfires can go ahead after all. Read about the Easter bonfires in Aa en Hunze here.

The Veiligheidsregio Drenthe, the regional emergency services authority, has raised the wildfire risk for Drenthe to the ‘extra alert’ phase. Stricter rules for open fires then apply. For example, a fire must be further away from places such as nature areas and thatched houses. None of the sites in Aa en Hunze meets those rules.

No significant rain is expected in the coming weeks, so the drought will continue. That means a wildfire could easily start and spread quickly. The municipality therefore sees no option but to cancel the bonfires. The organisers have been informed.

Mayor Anno Wietze Hiemstra calls the decision “a terrible shame” for everyone who had already worked on the preparations. “Unfortunately the weather has thrown a spanner in the works. This is beyond our control and really disappointing, but safety of course comes first.”
