The Rolder Paardenmarkt, Rolde’s horse fair, got off to an early start on the morning of Tuesday 10 September: the first horses, ponies and donkeys were already being unloaded at around 5.45am.

The market soon filled up with buyers and sellers, from professional dealers to hobbyists with a pony to spare. There were also many visitors who mainly came to look or were looking for a horse. By 7am there were an estimated 70 to 80 animals: horses of all shapes and sizes, ponies and donkeys. Animals are expected to keep arriving until around 10am, so the number is still rising.

The horse fair is part of the Roldermarkt, Rolde’s village fair, which is held every year on the second Tuesday of September. According to the organiser, OVVR, the Roldermarkt began as a livestock market where cows, pigs, sheep, chickens and horses were traded from 1785. That livestock trade has largely disappeared. The horse fair stayed, and over the years a goods market, an agricultural fair and other events were added.
